Who said you can’t learn a brass instrument? This department is designed to help every student develop the very same techniques used by professionals. As students explore various genres of music, they will increase their musicianship skills by developing their ear, increasing brass range, learning how to read and write music, and learning how to effectively play within an ensemble. Beginners, intermediate, and advanced students are encouraged to explore their creativity while learning technique and musicianship skills that will serve them for years to come.
The Youth Jazz Messengers will learn to apply their instrumental and vocal skills in an ensemble setting, learning the jazz idiom through improvisation, aural skills, and creative interpretation of America’s own art form. Students will learn to play different jazz styles from swing to shuffle to funk to latin to ballad, exploring and understanding how to create and recreate. Our Jazz Messengers will have fun making music together, no matter what instrument you play!
Students at intermediate or advanced levels can sign up for one-on-one lessons with an instructor. In these lessons, students will work on their specific needs, with lessons tailored to fit their abilities and goals.
